Hero Quest Chapter 1 Part 8

Anne smiled slightly.  “At least a three months now.  We both were working at Dick’s Diner.  He was the cook and I was a waitress.   We would party after work.  He writes poetry and songs.  It didn’t take long for him to win my heart.  Of course, my parents hated him from the start.  They never gave him a chance.”
John reached over and shut the sound off on his cell phone that was ringing.  “Rats, it’s the men’s mission.”
John looked back up at Anne and she continued.  “They told me to slow down.  But how can you slow down true love?  They wanted me to go back and finish high school.  I only have a couple of classes.  They took one look at his long hair and ear rings and totally missed his deep brown eyes.”
Anne seemed to be gathering strength with each moment.
“Anyway I told them they were total hypocrites and were judging.  Judge not lest ye be judged, I guess I told them.  But now I am thinking that maybe they were right.”
“I’ve never met Mark.  So I don’t know.  What does he think of the baby?”
“I haven’t told him yet.”
“Why not?”
“I’m afraid.”
“Tell me about that fear?”
Darlene came in and sat down.
“What if he leaves me like Eric did?  And my dad before him?”
Anne totally lost all control of her emotions at this point.  Darlene walked over and hugged her deeply and they held each other in silence.  John left them alone and went to his office to check messages.
John’s computer brought up a message.  “Meet with the city and Ron 15 minutes.”
Oh yeah.  John looked out at the table where the two women were now talking quietly.  John walked over and gently touched Anne’s shoulder. “Darlene can help you better than I can but can we talk later?  I have a meeting to get to.”
“Thanks for listening.  Yeah I’ll be around later.”
Even though John moved on to business the conversation with Anne was still ringing in his head.  The city and Ron discussed using the city’s homeless management system.  The mission was not required to use it since they did not use state funds; however there might be benefits that would enable all of us to win if we would voluntarily jumped on board.  Everyone involved was respectful and polite and various ideas were thrown about.
Suddenly a knock on the door interrupted the conversation.  John stepped out.
“We’ve got a problem,” Darlene glanced up a little embarrassed.  I’m meeting with Anne but Becky and Sarah are going at it in the parking lot.

Real Life at the Crisis Shelter February 27-March 4, 2012

Weekly highlights

Monday February 27:   One of our guests who is on our accountability list and needed to have a clean UA to get back in, had a clean UA and was able to stay with us on Monday night.  She was so happy that she cried for quite awhile.  Very exciting!
Tuesday February 28: One of our guests has an outdate for Wednesday but has put off most of her modules that she needs to be extended to tomorrow.  She started working on them very energetically making an attempt today to get them done.  Staff member Jerry Bishop captured and destroyed an unregistered guest today.  (A mouse for the record.)
Wednesday February 29:    One of our singles had a very dramatic and angry response to another one of our guests because the other guest was up all night throwing up and we should not be serving those who are sick.  Staff was able to reason with her for today.  The lack of grace on the part of the guest was a little shocking though.  The guest who was sick went to the hospital and expects to be there for the next week so all of the drama was really unnecessary.
Thursday March 1:    The angry guest from yesterday started lashing out another guest and at the same time connecting to another more vulnerable guest.  It became obvious that she was grooming this woman for some devious purpose.  We asked her to leave and break contact with this more vulnerable guest.
Friday March 2:   Friday evening a woman came to check in but was obviously not in a place to stay at the Crisis Shelter.  She was threatening and may have even in a fit of anger broken her pinky on the table in the staff office.  Staff calmly walked her off site.  The police are keeping an eye on her.
Weekend:   The shelter is being watched and several different guys are moving around the shelter.  At least one of them was actually for our neighbors at Hell’s Angels.  Several different guys (rough looking) at different times came to the shelter looking for women.  Each time staff was able to get them to leave but eventually the police were called and they began driving past the shelter more frequently.  Two of our guests were in a conflict several times over the past couple of days.  It culminated in both being asked to leave for a few hours and then come back for an accountability meeting.  One did return and was very apologetic and she was able to stay the night.  The other was in total blame mode and never returned to talk it out.

General comments:    Our battle seems to have been pushed back to the gate.  We will be praying more for the neighborhood.

I injured my right calf this week and this led to an overall lack of motivation.  All week I considered taking a sick day just to recover some semblance of motivation.  But I endured and did not surrender.  I did some work on my contest speech, worked on Tony Robbins series called Personal Power II.  One disk a day all week long.  The book for the week was called, "The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell"  I was reminded of many of the leadership principles that have gotten me where I am at.  My discipline may have struggled this week; but as of this writing I am picking it back up.
My heart is getting more focused and I believe God is showing me where to focus my efforts in the months to come.  More to follow for those who follow this blog.
