Real Life at the Crisis Shelter February 27-March 4, 2012

Weekly highlights

Monday February 27:   One of our guests who is on our accountability list and needed to have a clean UA to get back in, had a clean UA and was able to stay with us on Monday night.  She was so happy that she cried for quite awhile.  Very exciting!
Tuesday February 28: One of our guests has an outdate for Wednesday but has put off most of her modules that she needs to be extended to tomorrow.  She started working on them very energetically making an attempt today to get them done.  Staff member Jerry Bishop captured and destroyed an unregistered guest today.  (A mouse for the record.)
Wednesday February 29:    One of our singles had a very dramatic and angry response to another one of our guests because the other guest was up all night throwing up and we should not be serving those who are sick.  Staff was able to reason with her for today.  The lack of grace on the part of the guest was a little shocking though.  The guest who was sick went to the hospital and expects to be there for the next week so all of the drama was really unnecessary.
Thursday March 1:    The angry guest from yesterday started lashing out another guest and at the same time connecting to another more vulnerable guest.  It became obvious that she was grooming this woman for some devious purpose.  We asked her to leave and break contact with this more vulnerable guest.
Friday March 2:   Friday evening a woman came to check in but was obviously not in a place to stay at the Crisis Shelter.  She was threatening and may have even in a fit of anger broken her pinky on the table in the staff office.  Staff calmly walked her off site.  The police are keeping an eye on her.
Weekend:   The shelter is being watched and several different guys are moving around the shelter.  At least one of them was actually for our neighbors at Hell’s Angels.  Several different guys (rough looking) at different times came to the shelter looking for women.  Each time staff was able to get them to leave but eventually the police were called and they began driving past the shelter more frequently.  Two of our guests were in a conflict several times over the past couple of days.  It culminated in both being asked to leave for a few hours and then come back for an accountability meeting.  One did return and was very apologetic and she was able to stay the night.  The other was in total blame mode and never returned to talk it out.

General comments:    Our battle seems to have been pushed back to the gate.  We will be praying more for the neighborhood.
